Counterfeit cables pose a significant threat to electrical safety in India, contributing to a substantial number of fire mishaps every year. These substandard products often use inferior materials, which can lead to short circuits, electrical fires, and even loss of life. In an exclusive interview to Deccan Chronicle, Amit Mathur, President – Sales and Marketing, Finolex Cables Ltd., shares his insights on the issue and emphasizes the need for stricter regulatory enforcement and regular market surveillance.

Domestic cable and wire industry has urged the government to introduce strict laws to discourage the use of counterfeit electrical products by real estate developers. In the last decade, deaths due to electrocution have increased in the country. During a fire outbreak, smoke inhalation kills more people than the fire itself, R R Kabel Managing Director Shreegopal Kabra told reporters here on Wednesday.

But in reality, every brand faces this kind of issue — and the real problem is that most people buy electrical products without an invoice. When we buy illegally, there’s no traceability, no accountability, and no consequences for selling fake or unsafe products.

FORMER MUNICIPAL commissioner Praveen Pardeshi, also the head of technical committee on Safety Manual to respond to man-made disasters, said on Monday that nearly 70 per cent of the fire incidents in Mumbai take place due to electrical short circuits. He was speaking at a panel discussion ‘Electrical Safety is non-Negotiable’ in the city.“We have found that 69 per cent of the fire incidents reported in Mumbai happened mainly due to the failure of electrical installation. The second highest reason being domestic gas cylinder leakages, which is just 2 per cent.
